A Pakistani girl says that her experience of using private cab service was not so good as she ended up facing harassment by a driver.
As a step to take action against the cab driver she made a video sharing her experience and creating awareness among other girls who frequently travel alone.
In a viral social media video, she said “I was back from an interview when I ordered a cab service. On the way, the driver started staring at me from back view mirror, to avoid I started looking outside the window. He asked very personal questions that made me uncomfortable.”
“I ignored them but later he asked me more weird questions that I can’t share here”. She added.
“After this, I asked him to stop the cab, but he increased the speed and dropped me very far from my home. He said, I am not the driver, this is my personal car.”
“and if you are such a noble girl then why you come out of your home.”
While talking about her action against the harasser, she said, “The cab services are not safe, I lodged a complaint with high authorities to take action against such ride-sharing services and also contacted the student counseling of different universities. I want that we all should take an initiative to take action against these cheap rides.”
The incident happened to the girl is indeed disturbing. it would make her think twice while traveling alone next time, it is brilliant that she also raised voice on the issue and made other girls aware of the matter, but did she really set a precedent by taking a right action?
It was good she created awareness but more target oriented step against cab driver could have been something else.
What would have been proper action?
People came up with a different response on this video, as they didn’t consider it as a proper action.
Every service has a set of mechanism to report any such incident. If customers have some concerns against any cab driver then they can raise with the service provider who would take the action against the relevant person or simply end his contract.
Many girls who travel alone didn’t feel safe with ordinary cabs or Rikshaws and cited many incidents of harassments. By opting for a well-governed service they now have an authority to file their complaint. In case if service providers ignore don’t act against objections then they should be boycotted.
