The political climate between the nuclear neighbors, India and Pakistan, have been bitter since the claimed attack on Uri and surgical strikes. The tensions have not been contained to political scenario only; after the Uri attack the extremist Hindu party of India, Shiv Sena had not only threatened the Pakistani artists that have been working on projects in Indian film industry but also threatened the Indian producers working with the Pakistani actors.

The tensions have not been contained to political scenario only; after the Uri attack the extremist Hindu party of India, Shiv Sena had not only threatened the Pakistani artists that have been working on projects in Indian film industry but the extremist group also threatened the Indian producers working with the Pakistani actors and artists and the Indian artists that had been working on some projects with Pakistani producers.

There have been some mixed reactions from the Indian artists and producers about the Pakistani artists working in India and vice verse.

Indian Motion Picture Producers Association(IMPPA) has announced earlier this month that they would not screen any film featuring Pakistani artists.(IMPPA) has announced earlier this month that they would not screen any film featuring Pakistani artists.

Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, two leading artists of Pakistani film industry had been cast by the Indian producers in movies named Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Raees, respectively. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is a Dharma Productions movie which was supposed to open on this weekend. The owner of Dharma productions, renowned producer, Karan Johar (KJo), had maintained his silence on the threats and suggestions of boycotting the Pakistani artists; probably the producer was weighing his options and finally has bowed to the factors that are trying to sabotage the cultural ties between the two industries.

KJo has come forward through a video message he shared on Twitter coming clean about his patriotism and love for the people of his country adding that he would not work with a Pakistani artist hereafter. He explained that wen he started his project in Sept. 2015 the government of India was trying to build a peaceful relationship with the neighboring Pakistan. So, in the wake of those efforts he welcomed Pakistani artists in the Indian industry but that the situation is not favorable, he will stop working with the Pakistani actors.

On the other hand, artists like Om Puri, Priyanka Chopra and the superstar Khan of Bollywood, Salman Khan had come forward to support the Pakistani artists working in Indian media after the threats issued by Shiv Sena.

Priyanka Chopra, earlier this month had expressed her displeasure over the demand for a blanket ban on the Pakistani artistes in India in the aftermath of Uri attack, saying it is not justified that actors alone have to bear the brunt. After this statement, Priyanka Chopra is facing a lot of criticism from IMPPA.

Similarly, Om Puri was asked by a TV channel to boycott Pakistani production to which he on-air flatly refused.

It feels like the art and culture are also bearing the brunt of the political and military tensions and extremist hysteria which is a very unhealthy trend. Cultural ties are supposed to bring the people and nations closer but in this case, the binding factor is suffering.
