raid and arrests

Protesting against the recent raids and arrests by law-enforcement agencies, enraged demonstrators staged a sit-in and blocked the traffic in Karachi area of Malir. The workers of a religious party staged a protest sit-in at National Highway in Malir-15 late yesterday night following raids and arrests.

Following the blockage of National Highway for several hours, police sprang into action and resorted to shelling and aerial firing to break up the demonstrators. All private and government educational institutions were shut down in Malir, Model Colony, Kala Board, and Malir City owing to the tense situation.

Meantime, the MWM protest did not let the trains pass through the area. The protesters have staged a sit-in at the main Shahrae-Faisal near Malir 15 against the arrests of religious leaders who were detained after sectarian killings in the metropolis.

In the wake of the recent sectarian killings in Karachi, the law-enforcement agencies booked former Senator Faisal Raza Abidi on Sunday for possessing an illegal weapon. Raided Siddique-e-Akbar Masjid near Nagan Chowrangi – the headquarters of the banned outfit Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) – and arrested its general secretary Taj Mohammad Hanfi at a nearby location, and also rounded up Shia scholar Allama Mirza Yousuf Hussain of the Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen.

Several other suspects from both the Sunni and Shia communities were also arrested on Saturday in connection with the sectarian killings. The law-enforcement agencies had arrested Shia scholar Allama Mirza Yousuf Hussain of the MWM and shifted him to an undisclosed location for interrogation. He was presented before the court today in a hate-speech case registered at Shareefabad Police Station.

Police is busy in negotiations with the protestors. The metropolis is experiencing serious threat as protesters are throwing stones at police. National highway is experiencing massive traffic block. Should not this turmoil be resolved politically? Where are all the political forces? According to the national action plan, Rangers have taken the right decision. Some elements of society are hiding their sectarian violence and hate speech agendas under politics and Islamicization. Students and innocent people are being used in fulfilling such scheme. The public is facing problems in the performance of everyday chores as the whole area is at the halt by MWM protest. We should notice that no one is above the law, and when the cases are in the courts, protests becomes illegal. Government should tackle the pressure groups firmly.
